Make certain that your four-legged pal enjoys traveling before taking him on a long trip. Take time during the weeks leading up to your vacation to take him on several short trips so that he will be more accustomed to the sights, smells and sensations of riding in a car. If your pet is aggressive, ill-mannered or simply terrified of traveling, you may want to consider a qualified pet sitter or reputable boarding facility.

Have your pet examined by your vet; verify it's healthy enough for travel, that their vaccinations are up to date and obtain a Health Certificate and a Rabies certificate. Vaccinations vary from country to country so let your vet know if you're traveling out of the country. You should also research the destination country as to other requirements for traveling with pets there.

Larger pets will need to travel in the baggage area. Because this area does not enjoy the same insulation as the cabin, you should travel in the middle of the day during the winter (or at night during the summer) to make sure they're as comfortable as possible. Don't give them food in case they get travel sick, but do give them blankets and toys to play with.

When all is said and done, pets want to be with their owners. Even if it requires an angst-ridden period of adjustment - and leaving their scratching post at home - most animals will gladly sacrifice a bit of their push digs for quality time with the two-legged set. Sadly, the same isn't always true for teenagers, but I digress.

A recent trend among airlines and luxury hotels is to be more accommodating to man's best friend. On almost any given flight, it's not uncommon to see at least one traveler carrying a pet in a small pet tote. Pet owners now often share the same rights that parents do where, if it fits on your lap, it doesn't need a ticket.

There is usually two options when traveling with small children, lap or buy a seat. If the child is less than 2-years old they can sit in your lap for domestic flights. Most airlines do not charge for lap children. However, if you feel more comfortable, you can buy a seat and place the child in an FAA approved restraint.

Many hotels and motels now accept pets as guests. Find out in advance so that the establishment will be ready for your arrival. Spend some time getting your pet used to the room so that you won’t have any unexpected surprises.

While some dogs are water dogs and are genetic swimmers, most others have to be taught just as we do. Not only do we want to keep him safe on a boat he needs to be kept safe in any vehicle. Have you any idea how many dangers Fido faces in a moving car? And he is not any safer in a hot locked parked car.
